London, Europe’s largest city, is the sprawling British national capital. This is a vital, engaging city that brims with energy. History is alive and well here; you can visit Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Dickens House, Big Ben and the Tower of London, just to name a few, to learn about the long and fascinating history of this marvelous city. London is also a financial center, with the Bank of England making its home in “The City,” the 1-square-mile financial district at London’s heart. You’ll find a fabulous collection of museums in London, as well, including the National Gallery, the Natural History Museum, the Tate and Tate Modern, and the National Portrait Gallery.
London’s glory, however, isn’t only in its past. This is also a very modern, vibrant city. The arts scene here is extraordinary, and the film and music industries are thriving. London is also a European fashion capital, and top-flight stores including Britain’s own Harrods department store, Burberry and Vivienne Westwood keep swanky company with international fashion houses. Younger, hipper designers thrive here, as well. The restaurant scene is London has flourished in recent years, with innovative chefs taking dining to new heights.
The royal family is also a major attraction in London. Tours of Buckingham Palace – where the changing of the guard is a beloved tradition – and Kensington Palace are quite popular (though many are disappointed that the Kensington tour doesn’t include the living quarters of the late Princes Diana). Hyde Park, London’s glorious, mammoth green space, is home to the memorial for Princess Diana, arguably the most famous and beloved member of the royal family in recent decades.
