The Gothic spires of the Houses of Parliament jut into the London skyline like accusing witches’ fingers, but it’s the famous Clock Tower that signals proudly, “You are in London!” It’s actually the bell inside the clock that’s called Big Ben, and the famous “bongs” boom out every hour across the Thames. If you want a photo of the Houses of Parliament and the Clock Tower, don’t stand on the green outside. Walk across Westminster Bridge and stop mid-way for much better views. The Houses of Parliament consist of two chambers, the House of Lords and the House of Commons, and both are part of the Palace of Westminster complex. You can listen to live debates in both Houses from the public gallery, or witness the verbal mud-slinging at Prime Minister’s question time. However, you will need a permit from your embassy in advance, and only four are issued for each day. If you’re really keen to see inside but are not worried about seeing politicians in action, come during August and September, when the MPs are on holiday. Regular tours run every day through these echoing corridors of power, and last 75 minutes. Finish your tour with tea in the Jubilee Café in Westminster Hall and pose for a photo; it’s the only place in the whole Palace of Westminster that photography is allowed.

dgdarien's rating:

"The architecture of the Houses of Parliament is of course amazing. It has a stark contrast when you see it from across the river. I actually had a chance to go to some kind of public debate in the famous room in the Houses of Parliament. Of course it wasn’t very exciting as I had no idea what they were speaking about, but an interesting event nonetheless."
