Kensington Palace lies in one of the most exclusive areas of London, and for many the Palace is associated with the most glamorous of British royals – Princess Diana. It’s no coincidence that a major exhibition here (running until July 2007) is of portraits of Diana by photographer Mario Testino. Fans can also see some of her dresses in the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, a fascinating collection spanning three centuries of court dress, which also includes garments worn by Queen Elizabeth II. There is much more to the Palace than just Diana memorabilia. Members of the British Royal family have lived here for more than 300 years, and some still do, so only certain parts of the Palace Apartments are open to the public. You can visit the bedroom where Princess Victoria awoke to find herself Queen, and the room where she was baptised. The King’s Gallery has been restored to its former magnificence, and is home to a collection of fine 17th-century paintings. You can gaze on the faces that graced George I’s court, as they look out from the painted walls of the King’s Grand Staircase. Number 1A Kensington Palace was originally an apartment for courtiers, but more recently was home to Princess Margaret, who refurbished the rooms with Lord Snowdon. Guided tours take you behind the scenes in this fascinating insight into modern royal life.
