The London Underground system, or the Tube, is the mainstay of travelling commuting within the capital, with an amazing 2.5 million journeys made every day. The map of the London Underground makes it very easy to negotiate – just dont be fooled into thinking it is an accurate representation of the layout of the city! You can pick up the Tube map from most stations. The network is divided into six zones, and fare prices are determined by which zone you start your journey in, the zones you travel through, and the zone you finish your journey in. Zone 1 covers most of the City and the West End and at £1.50 for an adult single, is the cheapest adult fare (a carnet of 10 single zone 1 tickets can be purchased for £11). Children travel at reduced rates, but there are no reductions on the Tube for students or Senior Citizens. You can buy tickets from automated ticket machines or ticket booths in the stations. A £10 on-the-spot fine applies if you are caught without a valid ticket. One day travelcards (valid after 9:30 a.m. on weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday) and weekend travelcards give you freedom to use the Tube, bus and rail in specified zones. For weekly, monthly and annual passes you will require a passport size photograph for a photocard. Travelcards can be bought from all Tube stations and also from newsagents which have a pass agent sign. One-day, Weekend, Childrens and Family travelcards are also available.Dont forget to hang on to your ticket after you pass the turnstiles as you will need it to leave the station! If you opt for the one-day travel card (recommended for visitors), keep it for the rest of the day.You can call this hotline 24 hours a day for information on Londons bus and underground network. Information for the disabled is also available. You can also visit the office at Victoria Station, various other tube stations and Heathrow Airport. Call for exact locations.

I love subways!

"I LOVE subways! & the London tube is one of the best! It can get really crowded at times, but the trains are quite reliable and usually come often. I think it’s the best way to see the city. While you don’t get to sight-see during the ride, you can people watch, sleep, or get some reading done! If you’re like me, and get car-sick on buses, the underground is a god-send! & you’ll never be caught in traffic! It is pricey, but if you buy the day card (which you definitely should do! It’s less expensive than taking the metro just two times!), it’s not too bad. I think it’s definitely worth it! Be careful of the way the metro map is laid out- stuff can appear to be far apart, when it’s actually really close together, and vice versa! So you might end up walking way more than you wanted, or taking the subway for a long time when things are only a few minutes apart! Try to look up your destinations on a real map!"

A ride on the Tube!

Reviewed by dgdarien on February 01, 2007

dgdarien's rating:

"The Underground in London is superb. Its clean and convenient; its also easy enough to navigate. The only downside to me it seemed is the price! It seemed kind of pricey to me, especially if you travel in more than one ‘zone’. I guessed I’m just used to the $2 fee of the New York Subway system."

Just no other way to go

Reviewed by akrsouth on January 25, 2007

"On our last visit to the UK we stayed with friends outside London proper at their flat. I had a number of shoots booked throughout the week all over the city. We had absolutely NO trouble getting around and to places on time. We were able with aid of a city map to get to my shoots and meet our friends at different spots around the city. We don’t take public transportation here at home often and the stations were so easy to use. There was even one time a driver stopped his bus after we got off to make sure we got to the right stop. Please note not all the trains run on Sunday’s. "
