Summary of Old Bailey
Old Bailey
Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey
London, United Kingdom EC4M 7EH

The Old Bailey is the Central Criminal Court for England and Wales, and high-profile trials take place here (in fact, trials have been held here since 1674). The current Old Bailey was built in 1907 on the site of the former Justice Hall, which was right next to the infamous Newgate Prison. Most trials in the 18 courtrooms are open for observation from the public galleries, for anyone over age 14. Proceedings at The Old Bailey are nothing like the courtroom dramas on TV; cases are often protracted and tricky to follow, particularly when concerning fraud or finance. Consult the board outside as to which trial is taking place in which court. If you want to visit, make sure you are there at 10 a.m. when the courts open, as public gallery seating cannot be reserved. Also note that, during August, the courts sit less frequently.
