The steps of St. Martin in the Fields seem designed to trip up the unwary tourist as they jut out over the pavement. This site has been fought over ever since 1222, when the Abbot of Westminster nabbed it off the Bishop of London. This rather boxy church dates from 1726, but its grand interior just oozes music: Handel played organ here, and Mozart reputedly gave a concert. In fact, there always seems to be music going on, from candlelit concerts to memorial services for the great and good, accompanied by the truly excellent choir. The free lunchtime classical concerts, held every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday at 1 p.m., must be the best musical bargains in London. If the classics are not your scene, be here at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and enjoy jazz for only about $5 a ticket. The Café in the Crypt, under the south side of the church, is incredibly popular, and rightly so. Hungry shoppers, office workers, and romantics on blind dates fill the café’s echoing vaults with lively chat. There’s a varied buffet menu on offer, including excellent veggie meals. The great thing is, any cash you spend helps fund St. Martin in the Fields various activities, including a world-famous Social Care facility supporting the homeless.
