The London Tate Gallery, opened in 1897, is set in a beautiful palatial riverside edifice. Exhibiting Britian art from 1500 to present, the gallery is also known for its support of new and avant-garde multimedia artists. The modern art exhibited ranges from the Pre-Raphaelite period to Cubism. Giacometti, Picasso, Moore, Hepworth and Warhol are among the creators on show, and the gallery also annually exhibits the artists that are short-listed for the Turner Prize. Admission is free, except during special exhibitions.

Fabulous!

"I actually liked the Tate much better than the Tate Modern- I thought their modern collection was much better! On the steps outside, you could just see where the famous London grafiti artist had spray-painted “Mind the crap,” but that was at least two years ago, so I’m sure it’s worn away now! I think the museum is really dynamic and a great collection of art. The gift shop wasn’t too shabby, either- that’s where I found the Banksy book that showed a picture of the step, so I knew to get down and look when I left! (& I’d love a private tour like the retirees took! I have to check into that!!)"

An impressive collection

retirees' rating:

"We enjoyed the Tate Britain quite a bit. Our kids had paid for a gift tour for two, which meant we got to take a private tour with a guide from the museum. Given the size and scope of the collection here, we were glad to have someone to lead us through and help us prioritize, and it was so nice to be able to ask a lot of questions, which you don’t really feel like you can do when you’re part of a group tour. There were so many wonderful things to see; we especially enjoyed seeing the works of Thomas Gainsborough and John Singer Sargent. Our tour also included afternoon tea, which was a pleasant way to sit and rest a bit before heading to the Tate Modern."
