Carnaby Street made its name in the swinging ‘60s as the home of hip and groovy fashion, and it’s claiming back that title after years of tacky-tourism decay. The area has expanded from the original street that runs parallel to Regent Street. It now encompasses seven streets packed with well-known brands plus rising stars, selling style from shoes to surf wear. Avoid the crush and walk down from the Oxford Street tube station, turn past the side of Liberty and then under its famous clock. Turn left and you’re in Foubert’s Place, home to some very chic shops indeed. Next right is Carnaby Street, whose north end is perfumed by Lush’s handmade cosmetics and brightened by Muji’s window displays. Walk south and the west side of the street is a veritable boy’s zone, where sportsmen can find the latest training gear or get a smart shirt from perennial favorite Ben Sherman. On the east side the goods are more eclectic, including funky jewelry from Octopus. Not to be missed is Kingly Court, three stories of one-off designer shops around a courtyard, sandwiched between Carnaby Street and Kingly Street. Dive through the alleyway from either street, and you’ll find specialist shops plus the Walk-In Backrub store. A twenty-minute Luxurious Backrub will ease away any retail tension for less than $30.
