London’s tallest publicly accessible structure, the London Eye is the city’s best place to get “high.” It looks like an oversized bicycle wheel and carries 32 fully enclosed, clear-glass pods moving at a leisurely five feet per minute. On clear days you can see Windsor Castle, 25 miles away. London Eye was built to celebrate the millennium, as was Millennium Bridge, London’s first new pedestrian-only bridge across the Thames in more than a century. Can’t wait to take those “I was there” tourist photos? When you reach the pinnacle, at 440 feet high, you can fill your frames with more than 50 legendary landmarks – including Parliament, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace – during the half-hour ride. To add romance to the mix, sip some bubbly with your baby on a Champagne Flight, or book a private flight for two to pop the question. Savvy visitors ride at sunset, watching the city lights come on against cobalt-blue skies. Buy advance tickets to avoid lines. London Eye blinks every January, shutting down for maintenance.

Beautiful even from the bottom!

"I haven’t actually been up in the Eye, but I still give it 4-stars, because I think it’s beautiful from the ground! I have been to see it a few times, and I loved taking pictures of it from different angles. I would love to ride on it, but the long lines have always turned me away. I need to go again some day when I have a lot of time! So I can recommend just going to the area (and there’s more to do there- an aquarium, lots of little stands, a park with pretty trees in blossom in the beginning of May!) even if you don’t want/can’t go on it, because it’s beautiful!"

"I highly recommend going to the London Eye. it will give you fab views of London you would never see. Take your camera and be sure to purchase your tickets in advance, it makes life a lot easier. The line will seem long, but it moves very quick and is worth the short wait."

London Eye review

Reviewed by family on October 31, 2005

family's rating:

"This was one attraction that my daughters couldn’t wait to do, and it is really neat once you’re up there. However, London weather tends to be a bit rainy and cloudy, making for a not-so-clear view of the city. If you get a sunny day while you’re in London, stop what you’re doing and head straight for the Eye before the clouds come out. We still got some pretty nice pictures, though, and you can see a lot of the city. The Eye is also a good reason to get you down by the river to look around; most of the other attractions we were at are not as close to the Thames."
