Heathrow is a massive airport – its four terminals (and theres a potential fifth under consideration) cover 1,200 hectares. Its the worlds busiest international airport and the second busiest cargo port. Regarded as the hub of the aviation world, over 90 airlines have made Heathrow their base. Vast and sprawling, it can take some time to get between the different terminals so be sure to know exactly where youre going before you set off. There are cash machines and bureaux de change facilities throughout the airport, post offices in Terminals 2 and 4 and post boxes after passport control in each terminal. Heathrow has a range of short-stay, long-stay and business parking available (+44 800 844 844). All car parks are well signposted and the prices are clearly displayed at the car park entrances. The car parks are surveyed by regular patrols, they can provide extra help for drivers with special needs and they provide a free jump start service if you break down. Regular buses run between the terminals and the long-stay and business car parks. A valet service is also available. Heathrow is served by both overground and underground trains (+44 845 748 4950). The Heathrow Express takes 20 minutes to get into Paddington Station. The airport is also on the Piccadilly Line which takes passengers into central London via Knightsbridge, Green Park, Leicester Square and Kings Cross underground stations, though passengers with heavy bags should be warned that staircases are inevitable. There is a taxi rank outside the station. Several buses also serve the airport and services include a shuttle to London Victoria or London Kings Cross railway stations. Transfer between Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4 is free on the Heathrow Express train. Theres a vast array of food outlets at Heathrow ranging from the ubiquitous burger bars and coffee houses to sandwich shops and sit-down restaurants. Heathrow has tried to ensure high standards by bringing Egon Ronay and his team of restaurant inspectors on board and its worth looking out for the units that have Egon Ronay ratings. Restaurants and bars that belong to national chains have been price-fixed in line with high street prices so you should not pay a penny more than you would on the UK high street.
