It’s sometimes hard to remember, as you line up with hundreds of excited kids, that London Zoo is much more than just a collection of animals in a city park. The Zoological Society of London is actively involved in conservation and research and is a leading exponent of good practice in animal welfare. This is a good team who really cares. There is always something to amuse the kids, including pelican feeding, wild bird displays and the endless fascination of the penguins zipping around in their 1930s historical pool. Those fascinated by creepy crawlies and snakes will love the hands-on approach of the Reptile House. Every path through the zoo’s trees brings new delights, from the playful Oriental small-clawed otters to the magnificent but endangered Sumatran tigers, Raika and Lumpur. Children become breathless with awe when they see the sheer size of these big cat’s paws. Just when you think you’ve done it all, there’s more. Pop across the road using the special tunnel and meet the hilarious red river hogs wallowing in the mud or the stately giraffes. In fact, if cash or time or both are short, you can see the giraffes from the road in Regent’s Park, their heads popping over the hedge to surprise passing motorists. Entry price varies according to the season and starts at $25 for an adult, but remember that a fair proportion of your ticket price goes toward the Society’s conservation work. Kids under 3 get in free.
