Summary of The Golden Hinde

British explorer Sir Frances Drake sailed around the world between 1577 and 1580 in his ship the Golden Hinde. Drake may not have discovered America (nobody’s perfect!) but the real adventure was how he and his crew survived on the high seas in such a small ship. An exact replica of the Golden Hinde is nestled in St. Mary Overie Dock, behind Southwark Cathedral. This is no theme-park ship, though; this replica has sailed more than 140,000 nautical miles around the world. You can tour the ship, although anyone over five feet will need to stoop below deck. There are special pirate workshop days for the kids, while parents can relax with a pint of beer at the riverside pub opposite. Kids and parents can even sleep on board overnight on an imaginary voyage, learning 16th-century sailing skills, dressing in period costume and eating genuine Tudor recipes.
