Gordon Ramsay’s flagship restaurant is a treasure-trove of awards: three Michelin stars, voted one of the top five restaurants in the world by Restaurant Magazine and the proud recipient of an astounding ten out of ten for food in the Good Food Guide. Gordon Ramsay at Royal Hospital Road is an intimate dining experience, with only 14 tables, so booking months in advance is absolutely essential. The staff makes every diner feel special; no celebrities-only snobbery here. There is no background music, either – Gordon doesn’t see the need when the food is the star. Needless to say, you do pay for such exclusivity. The set lunch is $80, but most evening diners go for the seven-course Menu Prestige, at $180. Foie gras is often featured, whether combined with Peking duck or pigeon, or seared on its own. Seafood and fish are given star treatment but are never swamped with excessive flavors. The desserts are classic and classy: vanilla crème brulée, pear tarte tatin with gorgonzola ice cream, banana and caramel parfait in bitter chocolate. Wines are available by the glass; ask the sommelier and he’ll perfectly match the wines with your menu choices.The one thing you won’t find at Royal Hospital Road is a funky atmosphere, but with so much excitement on your plate, who needs it?
