Ever since chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa took New York by storm, his thirteen restaurants worldwide have been the byword for Japanese new-style food. London has three Nobu restaurants; the one at the Metropolitan Hotel was the first Asian restaurant to win a Michelin star. Blond wood tables with austere black chairs provide a modest yet modernist backdrop to the stylish food, and also for the antics of the famous diners. This is the Nobu, where you go to be seen, and where celebs come to eat when they’re feeling flirty, including Gwyneth Paltrow and the indiscreet Boris Becker. The multi-course Omakase (chef’s choice) is a seafood lover’s dream, where shrimp and lobster battle for top honors against black cod with miso and exotic sea urchin tempura. The policy of using the best seafood available in London means dishes use British produce, such as Scottish salmon and scallops. Your average meal here will cost more than $100 a head, so savor the flavors as well as the atmosphere. Nobu’s sibling down at Berkeley Street has a different feel, more relaxed and funky, serving dishes created especially for this site. Parties of up to six can just come along, no booking required, so it does get incredibly busy. The Canary Wharf Ubon (Nobu spelled backwards) is less glamorous and more likely to be filled with bankers than famous faces.

kelly's rating:

"i’ve been here twice, and the first time i experienced nobu was life altering. i mean that. i have never viewed food the same sense. it became spiritual. i gave it a 99 because i didn’t like where we sat the second time (-1). other than that. perfect. the kobe beef is insane."
