Chef Vineet Bhatia hit the headlines in 2001 when he was awarded a Michelin star, the first Indian restaurateur to ever receive the award. Now he has opened his own self-named restaurant (Rasoi Vineet Bhatia means the kitchen of Vineet Bhatia), based in a 100-year-old town house near Sloane Square. The dining areas are spread over two floors, with two rooms on the lower floor and private dining rooms upstairs. It all feels as if you’ve wandered into someone’s stylishly painted home for a dinner party; you even have the ring the doorbell to get in! However, avoid the stuffy front room and try to get a seat under the glass roof in the back Chelsea Cottage room. (Horrible name, nice space.) Bhatia says his influence comes from growing up in Bombay, a melting pot for regional Indian cuisine. Certainly, his dishes draw on a wide variety of flavors; his signature dishes include Tandoori spice smoked salmon, tamarind and cumin glazed quails, and ginger and chilly lobster dusted with cocoa. Puddings include the cheeky Chocomosa, samosas filled with marbled chocolate. There are no less than eight different menu options to select, from a two-course lunch or five-course lunch Degustation to the nine course (yes, nine) Rasoi Gourmand. Trivia: If you fly to the UK on British Airways Club World or First Class and choose an Indian meal, Bhatia developed the recipe!
