Harrods department store is an British institution. Chic mothers and daughters prance through rows of designer handbags, children float through the fourth-floor Toy Kingdom with their nannies, and well-heeled patrons take a break in the many restaurants and cafés. Your credit card will be screaming to get out as you browse through the clothing and home furnishings at this establishment, owned by Mohamed al-Fayed. Look for Liz Hurley’s new line of beach wear – sold exclusively in the U.K. at Harrods – nestled in with collections from legendary fashion houses. But the best part of this Knightsbridge icon is the food. That’s right – Harrods started as a small grocer and now its famous Food Halls attract tourists and locals alike. Sweets, meats, breads and tea – lots and lots of tea – can all be found in the maze that is Harrods’ ground floor. Spend an hour or an afternoon – but steer clear of the weekends, when it’s so packed you’ll barely be able to see the mouth-watering goodies that await.

Not really a "must do" for me

"This really wasn't on my top "to do" list while in London, but after I left the Natural History Museum I decided to stop by. This place is just too big! I literally got lost and could not find the place where I first started. On the other hand, there is a lot of beautiful and VERY expensive things here. If you are in London to buy a new Gucci bag or some hot Chanel shades, then head to Harrods. If you are there for a short amount of time and want to go see the best of London, leave Harrods for the bottom of your list."

Monument to Capitalism

"Harrods is absolutely amazing – never in my life have I seen so much available for sale in such a beautiful store. Each nook and cranny is beautiful and intricate and lovingly cared-for; I could have easily spent a couple of days in Harrods, just exploring the store itself, nevermind the merchandise! The food hall is incredible, particularly at Christmastime, then the sights and smells of holiday treats are thick. And for those who just can’t leave America behind, there’s even a Krispy Kreme!"

"this is is very beautiful store with lots of upscale merch. my favorite was the food hall. such a site. i only bought chocolate and tea. the only negetive was going here on the first day of their once a year sale. i have never seen a store so crowded. i thought that i could probably shop, dig or do about anything for a great bargian. i was wrong. it became a bit too much when a woman shoved me aside to grab the last of a hideous looking handbag that was 40% off."

Amazing shopping experience

"No matter what you are looking for, or even if you’re just looking, you will find it at Harrod’s. I aways cheat myself by going there a couple of hours before they close, thinking “I’ll just stop in for a hour or so,” and then end up staying until they kick everyone out. I have promised myself on the next trip to London I will set aside most of a day just to enjoy myself at Harrod’s. The decor, including the Diana shrine, is amazing. From the tourist department, where you can buy the wonderful green plastic Harrod’s shopping bags, to the children’s department with beautiful and proper English clothes, I love it!"

i could spend all day

"harrods was a weekly occurance for me when i lived in london. i rarely bought more than tea, food or a pair of shoes on sale, but i loved wandering around and checking out all the deluxe merchandise. the jewelry department is, of course, fabulous. all the designer clothing can be found upstairs (take the escalator – it’s one of the store’s most famous attractions), and they have a great toy department, but harrods is most famous for the food halls. case after case of chocolates, breads, meats, coffee, etc. everything is wonderful, and the place is packed. especially on weekends (duh). this is a tourist mecca…so watch out. go early. go in the middle of the week. go with a lot of patience. and go with extra money so you can buy treats."

Definitely worth a visit

Reviewed by retirees on April 30, 2006

retirees' rating:

"Because Harrods is a British institution, I actually managed to get Dale to spend a few hours in the store with me (though those three hours included lunch at one of the restaurants, the Sea Grill). I think he enjoyed the size and spectacle of the place (someone told us it covers 1 million square feet), and he also bought some snacks in the Food Halls to take back to our hotel. I picked up a couple little gifts for the grandkids, and a few trinkets for myself to keep as mementos, but mostly I just enjoyed wandering through all the departments. The variety of goods available here is amazing; you truly can find something for anyone you know."

Harrods review

"Harrods is a store I could get used to. Let’s start with the Food Halls; they are fantastic – so many delicious-looking foods in one area. We picked up some sweets to hold us over until dinner, and made our way upstairs. I loved the second and third floors, which held all the home wares, kitchen stuff and furniture; I skipped right over the first floor (which is technically the second – remember that) with its spacious racks of designer clothes – beautiful, but way out of my budget. The girls spent most of the time on the fourth floor with Harrods incredible toy department. My husband wasn’t too impressed – shopping isn’t really his thing, but he played along and enjoyed some time with the sports on the fifth floor. We didn’t come away with much, but we definitely enjoyed our time spent at this beautiful department store."

Harrods review

"Fancy dark chocolate truffles? A glistening strawberry tart? Or perhaps an organic fruit salad made with crimson plums, tangy tangerines and plump grapes? If you’re in the market for gourmet treats, do as I do and head to sumptuous Food Hall at Harrods, London’s grande-dame department store, owned by none other than Mohammed Al Fayed, the father of Princess Di’s former lover, Dodi (who died along with her in that awful car crash). The Food Hall’s beautiful, detailed ceiling hangs with chandeliers and baskets overflowing with colorful fruits and flowers. You couldn’t find a more luxurious market to shop in – and you pay the price. Yes, it’s more expensive than elsewhere, but in my opinion, nothing beats waltzing out of the impressive front entrance with your very own Harrods carrier bag in hand. Arrive at any dinner soiree with said bag and believe me, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. A tip: Harrods immaculately clean bathrooms are a godsend when you’re sightseeing in the area, plus they offer the fragrant bonus of scented sprays and lotions."
