Jeroboams are much more than just a chain of wine stores. Peter Rich opened his first store in South Kensington in 1985 selling cheese, charcuterie items and wines. He also established a Cheese Club that sent prime sample through the post to members. In 1999 Jeroboams took over another wine supplier, and the wine side of the business really began booming. In 2003, it also acquired the famous Milroy’s whiskey shop in Soho. All the wine shops have a quiet air of confidence, born from an extensive stock list and the backing of the Internet ordering system to boot. In Elizabeth Street, you can step from the wine store to the fine foods store next door for that essential tub of fois gras or pink champagne truffles. Or, you can stroll through Notting Hill Gate to the Georgian elegance of Elgin Crescent, where delicious breads spill out onto the pavement outside Mr. Christian’s delicatessen, another Jeroboam acquisition. Inside, there are delicacies galore, including trays of different types of olives and some great cheeses. Why not pack a bag with tempting morsels, a bottle of wine (from the Jeroboams store next door) and head for elegant Holland Park just down the road. On summer evenings you can relax to the strains of opera from the open-air theater; for free arias with your foccacia, sit in the gardens at the west side for the best sound quality.
