"You can’t go to Moab without trying out the Slickrock Trail. Even if you don’t think your skill level is up to it, you have the option of trying out the relatively short practice loop. Given that the entire trail is sandstone, there’s a surprising amount of variety along the way. As a fairly inexperienced rider (ie, I do most of my biking on paved urban trails), I was a bit intimidated by the surface which takes a bit of getting used to, especially since most of my other mountain biking has been on dirt surfaces. I definitely had unpleasant thoughts about my fragile bones and skin connecting with solid rock, a fear that was undoubtedly fed by the warning signs at the beginning of the trail as well as on every map describing the dangers of acting overly risky on the trail. For comparison’s sake, my brother, who is an experienced rider, completed the trail in about 2 hours without a single scratch or a moment of fear. Despite the wide difference in skill levels, we both had a lot of fun and would definitely do it again. We also went in February which was a great choice. Thanks to a mild winter, the trail was snow free and we didn’t have to deal with excessive summer heat or massive numbers of other riders."
