Once upon a time, I knew I’d live a bohemian lifestyle – working low paying but satisfying jobs, surrounding myself with creative and unpretentious people, and generally having fun. Then the prospect of eating ramen three times a day lost its luster and I accepted a desk position working in a cubicle farm surrounded by fabric covered half walls which can also double as bulletin boards. Alas, the rigors of paying bills (on time) and behaving like a semi-responsible adult was too much and I caved in to the pressure. However, living in the city (Chicago proper) helps alleviate some of the stress. There is always something to do and people-watching is exquisite, especially the Red line on a Friday or Saturday night. But even Chicago seems to grow smaller and smaller as the years pass and I find myself wondering why I can’t just disappear in a city of three million? Too often I run into people I shouldn’t have to see but once in my life. Perhaps a bigger city is in my horizon or perhaps, maybe, I just don’t know how to be content.
