The brilliant blue tinge of the Blue Ridge Mountains serves as a backdrop to Skyline Drive. Dissecting what is arguably one of the nation’s most beautiful national parks, the 105-mile byway weaves around deeply wooded forests. The Shenandoah National Park begins in the north at Front Royal off I-66; its southern boundary lies near Rockfish Gap.
Established as a national park in 1935, the area was first settled nearly 300 years ago by pioneer homesteaders. By the 1930s the government was slowly encouraging the Shenandoah region to return to its natural state; since then, wildlife has flourished in its backcountry.
Mile markers identify each area along Skyline Drive including the highest summit at Skyland, which sits at an elevation of 3,680 feet.
The visitor center at Dickey Ridge and Byrd, along with ranger stations, can assist travelers with maps and information on park lodging, camping, and nature trails, along with points of interest.
