Newport News is located in the Chesapeake Bay region of Hampton Roads in the southeastern corner of the state by I-64/664. With a population of 171,000 people, the city’s economy is based around its huge shipyards, together with the building of the US Navy’s nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers. The lineup of attractions in this town caters to both sea dogs and military aficionados.
The Mariners’ Museum is one of the city’s superior treasures, displaying everything from model period vessels to the great luxury liner era of the QE2, while the War Museum covers North America’s major battles from the Revolutionary War to Operation Desert Storm.
Children can view native animals and fish, or even take a peek at the stars, at the Virginia Living Museum. A more curious exhibit is the US Army Transportation Museum, where everything from khakis to mud flaps is on display.
Newport News has a regional airport. It is also accessible by bus and rail.
