Summary of Seattle Underground Tour
Seattle Underground Tour
608 1st Ave., Pioneer Square
Seattle, WA 98104
(206) 682-3705
Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour takes you, literally, underneath the Pioneer Square Historical District. This subterranean world, Seattle’s original downtown, was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1889. The city rebuilt two stories higher to solve drainage problems, so wear sturdy shoes for the tour because you’ll be climbing down dark stairs and walking on uneven terrain as you descend to what were once the city’s stores and businesses. Along the way, the guide will regale you with humorous and racy stories about Seattle’s checkered past, and you’ll learn about the city’s kooky characters and corrupt politicians. The tour begins and ends above ground; you’ll meet at Doc Maynard’s Public House, a restored saloon, and end up at the Rogues Gallery of fascinating photos and artifacts. Tours are given several times a day, but no reservations are taken, so arrive early; you can grab a beer at Doc’s or stock up on souvenirs. If you like it down and dirty, take the evening “Underworld Tour,” which delves into the prostitution and opium trades from which the city grew and profited. Either way, with its tall tales and sewage jokes, the Underground Tour is one of a kind.
