Hard to believe that a supermarket would become a major tourist destination? Well, wait until you step into the 66,000- square-foot Uwajimaya Asian Food & Gift Market, which has spawned Uwajimaya Village, a shopping, dining and 176-apartment living complex in Seattle’s International District. Fujimatsu Moriguchi began selling fishcakes to Japanese loggers in 1928, and after time spent in an internment camp during World War II, he went on to grow his food business into the multiple-location empire that is now run by his sons and grandchildren. You’ll be tempted to spend the whole day walking up and down the aisles taking in the dizzying array of foods from Asia and the Pacific; pick up some formerly banned Sichuan peppercorns to take home, along with dried fish, ginger cookies, sushi knives, ornate tea sets and clothing. Munch on fresh lychee or pickled squid as you gawk at the live seafood tanks, which should all really just gear you up for the food court. Sit down to onion tofu, Filipino longanisa sausage, Hawaiian manapua curry bun or yakisoba. You’ll also find a bookstore, seasonal events and cooking classes, and Uwajimaya Asian Food & Gift Market is right next to Safeco Field, so you might want to pick up a baseball picnic that’ll put your neighbor’s hot dog to shame.
