The oil town of Casper is Wyoming’s second-largest city; its burgeoning population of 47,000 is spurred on by its natural resources and college crowd. The downtown region is quite contemporary with Casper’s Nicolaysen Art Museum and Discovery Center on Collins Drive. Casper College hosts several museums, including its fossil exhibit at the Tate Mineralogical Museum and the Werner Wildlife Museum, where taxidermists proudly display their furry treasures. Fort Caspar began as an outpost along the Oregon Trail. Landmarks, including Independence Rock and Ayres Natural Bridge, are within striking distance, along with the Wyoming Pioneer Museum, east in Douglas off I-25. Historic Trail Expeditions provide wagon and horse treks along the Oregon Trail. Air service is available at Casper’s Natrona County Airport.
