Like most college towns, Laramie’s population of 25,000 enjoys a buoyant economy and cultural life.
Home to the University of Wyoming, Laramie sits at the foothills of the Medicine Bow National Forest and Snowy Range along I-80. There are numerous hiking trails and campsites in the region, plus a stretch for whitewater rafting at the North Platte River wilderness area. Laramie is also an excellent base for touring the smaller towns on the high plains together with Medicine Bow, a former Union Pacific Railroad town. Its only attraction is the Virginian Hotel, a period guesthouse that milks the legend of Owen Wister’s famous book, \”The Virginian.\”
Laramie’s historic district, dating back to the 1860s, features many handsome buildings including the old Union Pacific Depot. The University of Wyoming offers a number of museums including the American Heritage Center and the University Art Museum. Another good outing is guaranteed at the Wyoming Territorial Prison and Old West Park where Butch Cassidy served some time.
Laramie has daily flights and coach service to Denver. By I-80, the city is only 55 miles west of Cheyenne.
